Discover american viticulture
The history of the American wine business is linked to our history as a country.
Vitis Vinifera came to the Americas along with the European settlers of the 16th, 17th and 18th Centuries. But, the
US as a wine producing nation took a while to grow. On the eastern seaboard of the US - where most of the
population lived in the early years, the climate was challenging and the cost of growing high quality wine grapes
too high to compete at the time with European wines.
The Gold Rush era in the 1850s in California changed all of this. With the discovery of gold, people came to
California from all over the world. Immigrants from Europe discovered a Mediterranean climate perfectly suited to
growing wine grapes and the soon planted them all over the state, finding micro-climates uniquely suited to the
varieties of their home countries.
By the late 1800s, the US wine business was thriving - 90% of all of the wine consumed in the US at that time
came from California - and wine growing spread throughout most of the United States.
While the Prohibition era in the early 1900s dealt a severe blow to wineries - causing most to shutter their doors -
and essentially crushing the wine brands they made, it did not stop the growing of grapes. In fact, what sprung
out of Prohibition was a robust home winemaking business, where individuals purchased grapes for their own
personal wine consumption. This was how Robert Mondavi got his start: selling wine grapes.
It took until the end of the 1970s for the American wine business to start growing again and it is only in the past 20
years that we have begun to look with renewed vigor at historic vineyards and the diversity of grapes grown
throughout the US.
Today, there is an amazing diversity of wine in the United States. Small appellations with a few dedicated vintners
pushing the boundaries to create high quality wines with amazing flavors. It is Prometheus Wine Exports’ long
term goal to find these top quality producers from all over the United States and give their wines a platform on
the world stage.
We started Prometheus Wine Exports in 2023 in our own backyard of Sonoma and have barely scratched the
surface of the exiting, bold and innovative wines that are emerging from all parts of California and the United
States.
Hopefully, this sparks your curiousity to join Prometheus Wine Exports as we discover the rebels and pirates who
will chart the future course of American wine.
